At Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, every care package that reaches a deployed
service member begins its journey in our warehouse. At the heart of that operation is Volunteer Warehouse Manager, Sandy Hackl.
How Sandy Found Her Way to FSO
Sandy’s story with FSO began over a decade ago, when her company hosted a collection drive. “I bought some stuff for it,” she recalls. “Later I found the office location and started bringing items to the warehouse. About two years later, I started volunteering.”
Ten years later, Sandy is still here every Tuesday organizing, sorting donations, preparing for packing events, and assigning volunteers to tasks that fit their abilities. “No Tuesday is the same,” she says. “I get here early to make sure everything’s ready for our volunteers. We’ve got to make sure every box and shipping label matches. Those labels are paid for when they’re printed, so nothing can get lost.”
The Care and Purpose Behind Every Package
It’s a lot of work, but Sandy finds meaning in every moment. “I feel that I can make a difference in someone’s life who is putting their life on the line for us,” she says.
Her attention to detail ensures that FSO’s care packages are not just filled with kindness, but also with purpose. “I spend time figuring out what each troop can use,” Sandy explains. “Anyone in the Middle East doesn’t shave, so we don’t send shaving cream. It’s hot there, so lotion and sunscreen are needed. For those in Northern Europe, we send hand warmers and hot drinks.”
When asked what inspires her most, Sandy doesn’t hesitate: “Knowing that people are willing to help and support our troops. We make do with what we have, but every item makes a difference.”
She remembers one note from a deployed squad that especially touched her heart: “They said they couldn’t leave base — no internet, phone, or stores. They had nothing. We made them squad boxes with basics and goodies. They thanked us so much for bringing a little normal back to their lives.”
Leadership and Teamwork in Action
Sandy is also known for her steady leadership and the close-knit bond she shares with the Tuesday volunteers. She’s highly respected among the team for her organization, clear communication, and willingness to jump in wherever she’s needed. Her calm, can-do attitude keeps everything running smoothly, and she’s always ready to guide new volunteers with patience and care.
“Sandy is truly the backbone of our warehouse,” said Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Executive Director Lynelle Zelnar. “Sandy doesn’t just keep things tidy, she keeps our mission running smoothly. Her dedication ensures that every service member feels remembered and appreciated. She’s not just a volunteer; she’s a blessing to FSO and a true champion for our heroes.
Thank you, Sandy, for your tireless commitment and the love you pour into every thing you do for FSO and our troops. You make a difference in ways that words can hardly capture.”
The Impact of Your Support
To Sandy, that’s what it’s all about. “It feels awesome — the best thing about what I do,” she says. “It’s not easy some days, but it’s well worth it. You’re making a difference in someone’s life who’s working hard for us.”
Before wrapping up, Sandy wanted to share one simple message with our donors and supporters:
“Thank you for your support and donations — because if it wasn’t for what you do, we couldn’t do what we do.”
