About Us

Our People

Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar, Executive Director, stepped up to the plate to spearhead this needed outreach in October 2003. Her efforts began with gathering a few boxes of items (Gatorade, snacks, magazines, hygiene products, etc...) and a few letters to send to the initial three soldiers' names she obtained from a local family. She connected with the owners of The Oasis Coffee House, to try to gather more supplies and letters to encourage these three soldiers. Her announcements to the crowds opened the doors for a few local teachers to get the letter writing campaign started and brought in more items to package up and ship than she had initially expected. Through the years, it's amazing to see how this small desire to help encourage soldiers has turned into a growing nationally known organization, with businesses, corporations, religious organizations, schools from day care to college, and individuals from all over contributing to this mission. The response from our troops is why we do what we do!

Michael states:  “I started out with FSO because I had a vehicle big enough to help take the “we care” packages to the Post Office.   By doing that I saw a need in me to do something to give back to my country.  I saw a need to give something to a family that is much bigger than my own, and that family is all the men and women who are serving in all branches of the military.  By taking on the ideas of this organization and taking it to the point of a passion with me and the fact that I have this personal part, with a son who has been sent in harms way on several occasions, makes this organization very close to my heart.

"I love the Marine Corps with all my heart and miss it everyday, some of the best friends I ever made are Marines. I received many medals and commendations for my service, to include combat action, navy achievement, and navy commendation medals. My father also served this country in the US Navy, during The Vietnam War ,and was also a decorated service member, with 2 bronze stars. I got involved because I was touched in my heart by what FSO does and how they support the soldiers by giving them everyday items from home that are missed and greatly appreciated by many. During my time in Desert Storm, there was not an organization like this that existed and when I found them it blew my mind and I wanted to do my part as a veteran to help the service members to the best of my ability and let them know I appreciate all they do for us."

In Kathy’s words, this is how she got involved with FSO:  “I discovered FSO while I was cruising the internet looking for items I could send to my son in Iraq. I thought it was strange they weren't on Facebook and contimplated asking if I could make a page, so about a week later I checked facebook again and there it was! I immediatly contacted Francine, not knowing she was in Georgia, then I invited all of my facebook friends to join, which they did. I saw that there was an event close to where I live in Western Boca Raton, Francine told me who to look for at the event, and that was it I was in, hook, line and sinker! I really wanted to be involved, not just for my son and a few of his friends that are in the military, but for all of them. I believe if everyone gave back a few hours a month to whatever is close to their heart the world would be a much happier place”.

Helen Saucier, Packing Events Manager/Former Warehouse Manager , I wanted to send a package to a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan. I found a site on the internet, prepared a package and went to the Boynton Beach post office to mail. The clerk who waited on me told me about Forgotten Soldiers and I attended an "inventory" event. My brother and husband were stationed in Vietnam and I remember sending them packages, 30 years ago, and how much it meant to them. I'm a Controller for a country club and go to the warehouse just about every night, counting and sorting donations and organizing the merchandise. It never ceases to amaze me at the generosity of strangers and how people from all over the country send us donations as well as the churches, schools and organizations that write letters to enclose in the packages. Mail call is an exciting time for the soldiers and many do not have family who can afford to send them anything. Our packages and letters assure them that they are "Not Forgotten". I'm honored to be a part of this organization.

GEORGIA

Francine Thompson, Georgia Manager, Francine is an Army Mom, whose Son, Shane Johnson, was deployed in Afghanistan, and like most other Mom’s she wondered and worried about the well being of her precious young man during his deployment and because of that experience, she went on to become the Georgia Manager  for the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Program,  Inc.

She started with FSO back in 2005 while she was working for another not-for-profit organization; the Loyal Order of the Moose, Royal Palm Beach Moose Lodge 2245.

At the time she was the assistant to the Administrator and their membership wanted to get involved in a Community Service Project.  During her investigation into several worthy causes, she came across the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Program and because her Son was serving in Afghanistan at that time, she immediately sensed what better fit!      Their Lodge held a Fund raiser for FSO and was blessed with the ability to raise $2,800.00. That was the beginning for Francine. Fortunately for the Troops, she has been volunteering with the FSO ever since then.

When she moved to Georgia in August of 2008, Lynelle Zelnar, Founder and Executive Director of the FSO in Florida, asked her to see what could be done for the troops with other organizations, in Georgia.  And now she is up and running.....

Shannon Grote, Georgia Volunteer Manager and has been involved with FSO since January 09.   Her stepfather is an ex-Marine who served in Vietnam and both of her grandfathers served in WWII, thus, she has a special place in her heart for our troops.  She wants to give back to the soldiers who have b een serving our country and she hopes to show her 10 year old son the sacrifices that these Servicemen and Servicewomen have made.

Jake Grote, Georgia FSO Student Ambassadori s a 10 Year old volunteer in Georgia.  Jake is in 5th grade and joined FSO in January 09.  His grandfather served as a marine in Vietnam and his two great grandfathers served in WWII.  He loves volunteering and wants to be a Marine when he grows up.  Right now, he wants to help provide the soldiers with the many items that they don’t have while serving our country.

.Lucinda (Cindy) Hart, Georgia Packing Event Manager, After coming back from the black tie event, I thought how great it would be to bring the awareness of FSO to Georgia.  Well, I felt I could not do it by myself so I didn't.  When my sister wanted to move up here to be with me and I wanted the same, she had mentioned about starting FSO here in Georgia.  I started looking for things to do and came upon the North GA State Fair  and it went from there.  Having children and relatives in the service it brings FSO's mission closer to my heart. I am glad that I have joined with my sister to support FSO and it mission.

Heidi Wheatley, Georgia Events Coordinator, became involved with FSO, not because she has a son or daughter, husband or other relative serving in the military, but as a way to honor her late grandfather, Harold Sargent, Sr. Grampie, as she called him, was committed to serving his community and had a deep love for this country. After his death in October, Heidi desired to get more heavily involved in her community and stumbled upon the FSO. She decided that the organization's mission tied directly into the legacy passed on from her grandfather and she stepped up to assist with event coordination and marketing. Heidi currently serves as marketing director for J.P. Turner & Company, headquartered in Atlanta, and has more than 12 years of extensive marketing and event management experience. She is the proud mother of a teenage son who will also be volunteering his time in support of the FSO.
